Short-to medium-range commercial transport. The Tu-1344 differs from the original Tu-134, which entered Aeroflot service in 1966. in having an additional 6 ft 10 2/3 in (2.10 ml section inserted on the fuselage immediately forward of the wing to permit two additional rows of passenger seats and introduces engine thrust reversers. Basic flight crew of three and maximum of 80 passengers on four-abreast all-tourist class configuration.Prototype Tu-134A flown in 1968 and first production deliveries (to Aeroflot) mid-1970. Series production continuing at Kharkov at the beginning of 1975.

Maximum take-off weight has been increased by 5.512 lb (2 500 kg) maximum payload being raised by 1,025 lb (465 kg). an APU is provided, and radio and navigational equipment have been revised. Route proving trials with the Tu-134A were completed by Aeroflot late in 1970, and this airliner was introduced on international routes early in 1971. The shorter-fuselage Tu-134 serves with Aeroflot. CSA. Interflug LOT. Malev, Bulair, Balkan-Bulgarian and Aviogenex.
