First flown in 1948, the Mi-1 was the first Soviet helicopter to enter large-scale production, being used for both military and civil duties. Largely replaced now by the Mi-2, it remains in use with some smaller air arms as a communications and general-purpose type. The Mi-1 was built in Poland by the WSK works as the SM-1, and the Polish Air Force also has in service the SM-2, developed in Poland from the Mi-1 with a lengthened, five seat front fuselage and a nose-door for stretcher loading.
