Medium-range commercial transport. First DC-10 (Series 10) flown August 29, 1970. with first Series 30 (46th DC-10 built) flying June 21. 1972. being preceded on February 28. 1972. by first Series 40. Orders totalled 229 by December 1974. a total of 51 being delivered during the course of that year.
The DC- 10 Series 30 and 40 have identical fuselages to the DC-10 Series 10 (see 1972 edition), but whereas the last-mentioned version is a domestic model. the Series 30 and 40 are intercontinental models. and differ in power plant. weight and wing details, and in the use of three main under-carriage units, the third la twin wheel unit) being mounted on the fuselage centreline.
