Two-seas shipboard multi-purpose fighter. First of 12 research and development aircraft flown December 21, 1970. Total of 234 ordered by 1975 (with 121 delivered) against procurement for US Navy and USMC of 334. Eighty ordered for Iran with deliveries commencing earn 1976. Current production rate of 6-7 per month.

First of two F-148 prototypes powered by 28,096 lb (12 745 kg) reheat Pratt & Whitney F401-PW-400 turbofans flown on September 12, 1973. No production plans for this version exist.
