Amphibious search and rescue Hymn boat. The US-1 (alias SS-2A) is an amphibious rescue derivative of the SS-2 maritime patrol flying boat see 1974 edition). Featuring a retractable undercarriage. the main twinwheel members of which retract into bulged housings. the US-1 has a 1.400 ehp General Electric T58- 10 turboshaft driving a boundary-layer control compressor for the flaps. elevators and rudder.
Crew of eight comprising pilot. co-pilot. flight engineer. radar operator, navigator. radio operator. observer and rescue man. Up to five medical attendants and 36 stretcher casualties. Status: First of three US-1s ordered by the Japanese Man-lime Self-Defence Forte flown October 16. 1974. with delivery scheduled for March 1976. delivery of second and third aircraft planned for Juno and December 1975 respectively.
